Guidelines for language use
How can we talk about suicide and suicide attempts in a thoughtful and respectful way?
It is important to challenge the stigma surrounding mental health, as well as suicidal thoughts and suicidal behavior. By doing so, we can help prevent suicide and ensure that people at risk receive the support they need. One way to make a difference is by being mindful of the language we use when talking about suicide.
At DRISP, we aim to share knowledge that promotes non-stigmatizing language. We have therefore developed language guidelines, which can be downloaded here.
How do you talk to someone who is suicidal?
It can be difficult to be a family member or close friend of someone experiencing suicidal thoughts. To support you as a loved one, we recommend you to read “The Five Steps” for talking with someone who may be considering suicide.
“The Five Steps” are supported by evidence from suicide prevention research. You can read “The Five Steps” here.
