Facts about suicide
At DRISP, our vision is to reduce suicidal thoughts, suicide attempts, and suicides in Denmark.
We therefore work purposefully to communicate our research findings to all who may benefit from them.
We do this through our professional newsletter Fagligt Nyt, by being active on social media, by organizing workshops, by making ourselves available to the media when they seek information on suicide prevention, and by proactively reaching out to the media when we have important insights to share.
Latest figures
There are approximately 550–600 suicides per year in Denmark. In 2024, a total of 580 suicides occurred. Suicide is more common among males than females, and the suicide rate for males in Denmark is approximately 15.4 per 100,000 inhabitants aged 15 years and over, while females have a suicide rate of approximately 6.1.
It is unclear exactly how many suicide attempts occur each year. Information is being collected on the number of suicide attempts treated at hospitals, but not everyone seeks medical attention after a suicide attempt. In 2023, the Danish Health Data Authority reported that 2,915 suicide attempts were recorded at hospitals, of which 2,085 were among females and 830 among males.
